USB port

Visually identifying USB 2.0 port?

I have four USB ports in my pc, 2 at the front and two at the back.

According to the device manager, under the hard ware tab, it says i have a usb 2.0 root hub (i assume this is one of the four ports).

Can some one tell me how i can find out which one is the usb 2.0 port after i have plugged a device into the usb ports....??????

I need to know this so that i can reply to anothe post....


pc is an IBM intel pentium 4 2.40 GHz At/AT Compatible

260.080 Kb RAM

First off You can identify whether your PC has Hi-Speed or not relatively easy. Open Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus section. There should be an “Enhanced” USB host controller present.

The "high speed" part of USB 2.0 host controllers goes by EHCI programming model, while the normal speeds from USB 1.x are run on UHCI or OHCI controllers.

So if your Device Manager isn't listing an "Enhanced Host Controller" in the USB section, then you don't have USB 2.0. In the "Devices by Connection" view, you'll also see what peripherals run on what controllers.

The way it works is this:

Immediately when plugging a USB device in, the controller senses whether it's a Low, Full, or High Speed device. (High is faster than Full. Don't ask.)

Now, if a USB device is connecting to a USB 2.0 port, the device type is sensed. If it is a High Speed device, this particular port is handed over to the one EHCI controller in the system for High Speed USB 2.0 operation. Else, the port remains on the UHCI or OHCI controller that "owns" this port for Low or Full speed USB 1.1 operation.

So to answer( YES ) Keep in mind that you won't get optimal performance from every single device, at least not when you're using them all at the same time.

But they will all can be used for 2.0

OKAY i do have an "enhanced" usb port:


Intel PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller

USB 2.0 Root HUB



The rest are standard USB root hubs

so does this mean, that if i plug into any of the 6 usb (discovered 2 more at the rear!) ports, all of them will act as USB 2.0 ports?
so that means it wont matter which 1 i plug into....because it will become a usb 2.0 port?

btw im only plugging 1 usb device......
